The Eritrean Liberation Front was between 1960 and 1980 the main Eritrean guerrilla movement engaged in an armed struggle with the Ethiopian army for an independent state.
Today the ELF is based in Khartoum, Sudan, operating political organization that is opposed to the current regime in Eritrea. The originally Marxist-Leninist organization was founded in July 1960 by Eritrean students in Cairo, Egypt with the aim of establishing a state of Eritrea independent of Ethiopia through guerrilla warfare. In 1961 an armed branch, the Eritrean Liberation Army (ELA) was established. The guerrilla war against the Ethiopian army erupted in 1961 and would not end until 1991 when the Ethiopian army was defeated.
