Book made in the Netherlands by the CPN (Communist Party Netherlands), 1952 with the memoir of Gerben Wagenaar.
Gerben Wagenaar (1912-1993) was a Dutch politician. Wagenaar was a communist resistance member and leader of the CPN in the House of Representatives.
Gerben Wagenaar worked at the outbreak of the Second World War at the Municipal Energy Company in Amsterdam. He joined the resistance as “blonde Freek”, and from May 1941 to May 1943 he was the leader of Militair Contact, a communist resistance organization. From 1943 until the liberation in May 1945 he was a member of the Council of Resistance, the last months of which as chairman and representative in the Interior Forces.
In 1958 the CPN fraction split over the renewal attempt by Wagenaar. The party apparatus, led by CPN chairman Paul de Groot and the editor-in-chief of De Waarheid, Marcus Bakker, hit back hard. The rebellious members were expelled by the CPN in early 1958. In 1982 the CPN decided to restore the outcasts of 1958. The “red book”, “The CPN in the war”, in which suspicions had been raised against them and Wagernaar was accused of having actually been a British agent, was withdrawn at a party congress as a party document . However, he showed no interest in the possibility of rejoining.
