The Kingdom of Yugoslavia came into existence in 1918 after the First World War. It was formed out of the territories of the former Austria-Hungarian Empire.
In 1941 the country was invaded bij the Axis powers and in 1945 the partisans (led by Josip Tito) abolished the kingdom and installed a communistic state under rule of Tito. He was the president until is dead in 1980.
From 1991 until 2001 several wars broke out between etnic groups within Yugoslavia. Resulting in The Yugoslav Wars or Balkan Wars. Often described as Europe’s deadliest conflicts since World War II. At least 300.000 people were killed.
The former Yugoslavia is now split into several country’s, Serbia, Kroatia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Slovenia and Macedonia.
